It’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week so we’ll be shining a light on the vital role apprenticeships play in supporting individuals, employers and people who use social care and early years services in Scotland.

Last month we shared information about this new college course, funded by the National Transition Training Fund, which can help people to prepare for a new career in social care.

SSSC’s Learning and Development Adviser, Kerry Cannon recently spoke with Sarah Allison, Learning and Skills Manager at West Lothian College, who told us about a new initiative designed to help mobile testing unit operatives start new careers in health and social care.

This new course is available to people over 25 who are unemployed (or at risk of unemployment or redundancy) and considering a change of career. It’s funded by the National Transition Training Fund which means there is no cost to take part.

We’ve created a new toolkit on our careers website to help you help others start a career in childcare, social care or social work.

Are you a social worker looking to develop your career? If you have two years experience and work for a council or health and social care partnership you could train to become a mental health officer. 

The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create jobs for 16-24 year-olds on Universal Credit.

Foundation apprenticeships (FA) are for pupils in fifth and sixth year of secondary school and take two years to complete. There are two social service foundation apprenticeships.

South Ayrshire Council shared their story of modern apprentice, Hannah Spence, and her experience and dedication to her role working during the pandemic.

This week (1-5 March) is Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which is an opportunity to share the value apprenticeships can bring to individuals, employers and people who use social care and health services. The theme of this year’s week is Business Backing Talent, to showcase the great things that happen when employers back talent through apprenticeships.
