Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2024 - Alix's story

This Scottish Apprenticeship Week we’ll be sharing stories from apprentices working in social care and children and young people services across Scotland to learn more about the vital role they play in supporting individuals, employers, and the people they provide care for.

Today, we share Alix’s story.

Alix is a Modern Apprentice Social Services (Children and Young People) employed by Angus Council and working at Whitehills Nursery in Forfar. Alix started her modern apprenticeship in August 2023.

Why did you choose a modern apprenticeship?

I choose a modern apprentice as I am a kinetic learner and find I learn to the best of my ability when I’m involved in the action. I knew that I could stay at school and do a college course doing a similar experience, but I thought much more was available through an apprenticeship. All going well I’ll graduate next summer.

What has your experience been?

I have enjoyed my experience thoroughly and can’t wait to continue my journey. You don't only meet your amazing team and children but other apprentices going through a similar experience. As a modern apprentice you don't just sit and observe you are handed many opportunities from helping and leading with snack time, helping with toilet training, setting up activities, leading activities, having a key child and much more.

What is a typical day like?

Every day at nursery is different and that’s what makes it so exciting, there is a routine but endless possibilities. The thing I enjoy most about my day is seeing the little ones smiles when they have achieved something that they have been finding difficult, even if it's something we think is a simple task, like going to the toilet, zipping a coat or blowing their nose.

What words of advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

If your passionate about wanting to work with children, go for it. Don't let anything stop you, it doesn't matter if all your friends are at a completely different stage than you, still grab every opportunity.

From age six, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. The passion grew with age and I started volunteering in the nursery of my high school and at local youth clubs. Little did I know that this was going to do wonders for my CV, I was reaching an age where I was starting to need a job and applied to work at the local soft play where I still work. I am now working in a beautiful setting that I started my journey in back when I was a toddler with a mentor who was my key worker when I was little.

I feel that apprenticeships are the best opportunities for teenagers like me as it lets them get on the job experience while gaining a qualification. It helps build confidence in practice and your faced with real situations that a textbook couldn’t write.

I am loving my time as an apprentice and truly hope more people take this route.
