Careers in care Social service workforce

Scottish Apprentice Week 2023 - Nathan's story

This Scottish Apprenticeship Week we’ll be sharing stories from apprentices working is social care and children and young people services across Scotland to learn more about the vital role they play in supporting individuals, employers, and the people they provide care for.

Today, we share Nathan’s story.

Nathan is a Social Services and Healthcare Modern Apprentice employed by Glasgow City Council at the Wallacewell Day Centre. He started his apprenticeship in November 2021.

Why did you choose modern apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship to gain new skills and qualifications. I was keen to gain qualifications which would enable me to pursue a career within social work services.

'I enjoy working with the older people who use the service and feel more confident as my apprenticeship progresses in understanding the people attending and the organisation and benefits of the service.'

What has your experience been?

My experience as an apprentice in day care for adults has been good as I have had the opportunity to learn my role with hands on experience and through personalised and online training routes.

I enjoy working with the older people who use the service and feel more confident as my apprenticeship progresses in understanding the people attending and the organisation and benefits of the service.

What is a typical day like?

A typical day would be to come in have a morning review meeting with staff and plan out what the activities for that day would be. Then we would pick up service users to bring them into day care. I would then go on to take part in what we have planned for that day. Once the day is over, I would fill in the daily logs then it would be home time.

What do you like most about your job?

The things I like most about my job is being able to hear the stories of service users’ lives, being able to make other people’s days better by having conversations with them. I like that it has built up my confidence not only in myself but being able to work with others and that I have gained lots of new experiences while working in day care.
