Careers in care Social service workforce

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023 - Amy's story

This Scottish Apprenticeship Week we’ll be sharing stories from apprentices working is social care and children and young people services across Scotland to learn more about the vital role they play in supporting individuals, employers, and the people they provide care for.

Today, we share Amy’s story.

Amy is a Social Services and Healthcare Modern Apprentice, employed by Fife Council in a service supporting adults with learning disabilities. Amy started her apprenticeship in December last year.

Why did you choose a modern apprenticeship?

I chose a modern apprenticeship as not only would I gain experience and a qualification, but I would also be earning a salary while working.

'Having an apprenticeship comes with so many advantages. Going to university is not the only way to get where you want to be. Working as a modern apprentice gets you the qualifications and the experience you need.'

What has your experience been?

So far, I've really enjoyed my time here. Everyone here is lovely and answer all my questions about what I've been learning or anything I'm curious about.

What is a typical day like?

I start my day at 9.00am where I help with personal care. I start by reading care plans, interacting with staff, and bonding with our service users. I like to help out as much as I can and sometimes, I go out with colleagues and service users for the day which is nice as I get to see them interact within the community to maintain their independence.

What do you like most about your job?

Since I’m quite new to my job, I enjoy everything that I'm doing as it allows me to continually learn and gain experience. I also enjoy that I get to help people with everyday life.

How relevant is the qualification requirements to the work you are doing?

I’m just about to start my SVQ level 2 which will give me the qualification I need to register with the SSSC once I complete my apprenticeship.

What words of advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

I would tell anyone they should absolutely apply for one. Having an apprenticeship comes with so many advantages. Going to university is not the only way to get where you want to be. Working as a modern apprentice gets you the qualifications and the experience you need. Sure, it can be a bit nerve racking being new and you don’t know what to do but by the end of it you are a fully trained care assistant.
