How did you get into working in social care?
I began working in social care following the passing of a family member who required additional support in their daily life. This gave me the drive to look for a new way to help others in the same way they had.
What does it mean to you to be SSSC registered?
Being registered with the SSSC gives me the reassurance that we get the support, guidance and accountability needed.
What’s your experience been when working towards you qualification?
Before starting in social care, I had no relevant qualifications, but I was given the support to develop my skills and begin that journey. I had severe anxiety and didn't think I would manage to get back into education, but I was proved wrong.
Through continued support from my employer, colleagues and assessor, I have completed a qualification in leading and managing in care at Fife College and I'm just about to begin a second qualification in social services.
How did you evidence learning for assessment when completing you SVQ?
When I required evidence to support my learning, I was able to rely on my personal and professional experience, along with the support of staff and colleagues. I was able to use observations, professional discussions and the daily challenges of providing care.
What words of advice would you give someone who still needs to gain their qualification?
The best advice I could give to anyone who still requires a qualification is just to be open to it. The support is there for anyone who's willing to put the work in.
