Understanding your CPL and RTP registration requirements

We recently held online events to support employers to understand how people should meet the new continuous professional learning (CPL) and return to practice (RTP) registration requirements which came into effect in June 2024. 

The presentation slides are now available for you to use and to share with your staff.  

The presentation on the new CPL requirements includes:  

  • the principles behind CPL which emphasise responsibility, improving lives and quality of care, relevance to each role, career support and professional practice improvement  
  • annual declaration 
  • a focus on key skills and knowledge for different career stages 
  • core learning elements for each Register group 
  • new requirements for newly qualified social workers 
  • mandatory learning on trauma and protection  
  • information about resources and support for CPL
  • flexibility for the SSSC to revise requirements based on emerging skills gaps.

The presentation on the new RTP requirements includes:  

  • the requirements for social workers returning to practice after a period of absence 
  • the hours of practice and learning needed 
  • the types of learning evidence required, such as supervised practice, formal learning, and informal learning 
  • the importance of understanding current legislation, social work skills, standards and child protection.
