Social Work Week 2025 - supporting your CPL journey

New continuous professional learning (CPL) and return to practice (RTP) registration requirements came into effect in June 2024

This Social Work Week, Kristina Robb, SSSC Learning and Development Adviser tells us what this means for social workers.

‘Alongside the new CPL requirements, the SSSC introduced several other changes including an annual declaration. This means you now need to confirm you have completed your CPL every year rather than renewing your registration every three years.

‘We’ve moved away from recording hours and days and now focus on key skills and knowledge required at important career stages, such as induction, change of role and return to practice.

‘The CPL requirements now include eight core learning elements for social workers which you’re expected to cover every year. Each learning element aligns with the Standards in Social Work Education (SiSWE) and is designed so that any piece of learning can be attributed to at least one standard.

‘There are also new requirements for newly qualified social workers to support the mandatory supported first year of practice that also reflect the SiSWE.

‘To help you on your new CPL journey we’ve produced a website which provides a range of free resources under all the core learning elements.

‘Social workers who’ve had a break from working and have been off the Register for over two years must complete a minimum number of hours of supervised practice, formal and informal learning.’

You can learn more about the changes and CPL and return to practice requirements in Kristina’s short video presentation below.
