Social Work Week 2025 – supporting anti-racism in social work

This Social Work Week we are delighted to update you of our commitment to embedding anti-racism in social work across Scotland.

Social Work Anti-Racism Oversight Group

We are proud to be a member of the national Social Work Anti-Racism Oversight Group which was established in 2023 by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Association of Social Workers (SASW) together with other partners from across the social work sector.

In November last year the group published a statement of intent, which will lead to an action plan, setting out a vision for anti-racism to be embedded in social work practice.

Hear more about the Social Work Anti-Racism Oversight Group from Regis Lopez, Policy Lead for Anti-Racism in Social Work at the Office of the Chief Social Work Adviser in Scottish Government.

We know from research carried out by SASW and IRISS that racism exists in the social work profession and that it is harmful to the wellbeing of both social workers and people who access social work services.

New anti-racism learning resource

As part of our commitment to anti-racism, we are developing an anti-racism learning resource for social workers. The resource is being developed in partnership with social workers with lived experience of racism.

The resource will promote learning and reflection on anti-racism in social work, and help social workers explore what it means for them at different stages of their careers. It will include materials which promote self-reflection and exercises to use in group settings. It will have modules aimed at different career stages from newly qualified to advanced practice.

Sarah McMillan, SSSC Learning and Development Adviser tells us more in this short video clip.

The new learning resource will be available on the SSSC Learning Zone soon.
