Lucy is an Early Years Practitioner at Papillon Nursery Maxim in Motherwell. She started her Modern Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children and Young People) in September 2022, qualifying in August 2023.
Why did you choose a modern apprenticeship?
I chose a modern apprenticeship as not only I would be getting experience I would be working and earning myself money at the same time. Doing an apprenticeship comes with so many good things. I would be learning on the job as well as getting a qualification.
What has your experience been?
I absolutely love it. Every day is different. Everyone is so nice from the staff to the parents. Everyone was so welcoming and if I had any questions about something when I was doing in my qualification or work I knew I could just ask.

What is a typical day like?
Every day is different, but I start my shift at 7.30am and get the room ready for the children coming in. I set out challenging learning experiences for them and I also put things out that I know the children will love. I start to welcome the children into the playroom at 7.45am where I greet the children and their parents.
In the mornings we do welcome time. This is where children get into their key groups with their key worker and spend some time talking about what they want to learn that day. We also share any news that they have from the weekend or if they have any other news.
During the day we go outdoors, on walks and do some dancing, the children love doing these things. In the nursery we focus on children’s voice so this is where if the children want to learn or create something then they can let the staff know and we will follow their likes and make it a fun and happy environment.
What do you like most about your job?
The thing I love about my job is just seeing all the children being happy and creating a bond with the children and parents and being someone they can trust. I also really enjoy being able to continuously learn and gain experience every day.
How relevant is the qualification requirements to the work you are doing?
The apprenticeship qualification is relevant as you get to learn more about what you are doing in the workplace as well as doing your qualification work.
What words of advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
The words of advice I would give to someone is go for it. It is so rewarding and seeing the children happy in your care really makes it all worth it. I would also recommend not to give up with your work and always meet the time your assessor sets for you to complete your work. An apprenticeship is the way forward no matter what age you are.
