New website for Newly Qualified Social Worker Supported Year in Scotland

Our new dedicated website for the Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) Supported Year in Scotland is now live.

It is designed for NQSWs, employers and supervisors to support consistency in the implementation of the mandatory supported first year of practice.

The website includes:

  • useful information for all NQSWs, their employers, managers and supervisors
  • information about the current requirements for NQSWs, including core learning elements and mandatory activities
  • updates on news and events relating to the NQSW Supported Year
  • learning resources informed by our work with employers, managers and social workers from a variety of backgrounds.

The supported year

From October, supporting NQSWs using the definitions of employer support will become mandatory for all NQSW employers. This supports the Scottish Government’s ambition to create a strategic framework from qualifying education through to advanced practice for all social workers and social work employers in Scotland.

The supported year provides an infrastructure so that all social workers know what support they will receive from their employer to assist their transition from education into the workforce during their first year in practice.

Our role

In 2018 we were commissioned by the Scottish Government to provide  recommendations on the design, implementation and delivery of a sustainable and accessible NQSW Supported Year. Since 2018 we’ve worked with early implementation areas to make sure the new approach is right.

We’ll continue to support the workforce and implementation by providing resources to support employers and NQSWs, as well as overseeing NQSW continuous professional learning (CPL).

Visit our dedicated NQSW website.

Keep up to date

We’ll provide updates on the NQSW Supported Year over the summer on the NQSW website, SSSC news and social media.
