New Recognition of Prior Learning Matrix supports staff induction

We’ve worked with Public Services Delivery Scotland (formerly NHS Education for Scotland) and Qualifications Scotland to develop a new Recognition of Prior Learning Matrix which allows workers, employers and assessors to evidence prior learning towards the SVQ Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF Levels 6 and 7.

The matrix will form part of the National Induction Framework (NIF) which launched last year to provide a consistent, high quality induction for new adult social care staff.

What is recognition of prior learning?

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is an assessment method used by SVQ assessors to determine if learners have demonstrated skills, knowledge and understanding through non-accredited learning, such as induction training, to minimise over assessment.

About the matrix

The matrix maps the learning outcomes from the NIF standards and the SSSC Codes of Practice to SVQ Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF levels 6 and 7.

It can be used to:

  • provide clarity and consistency in recognising induction learning
  • support assessors and verifiers to apply RPL consistently
  • help employers understand the qualification pathway
  • reduce duplication and over assessment to improve learner experience
  • embed guidance within quality assurance processes.

Launch event

We’re hosting an online webinar with Public Services Delivery Scotland and Qualifications Scotland on Tuesday 28 April at 11am to 12.30pm

The session is for registrants, employers, learning and development staff, assessors, verifiers, training providers and awarding bodies and will cover:

  • introduction to the RPL Matrix and its development
  • how NIF learning maps to the SVQ at SCQF Levels 6 and 7
  • guidance for assessors and verifiers on applying RPL consistently
  • how employers can support staff using the new resource
  • where to access materials on Turas NIF and partner websites.
