Meeting qualification conditions

You don’t need a qualification to start working in social care or children and young people services as we can register you with a qualification condition. However, it’s important you do work towards it and keep in touch with us.

A qualified workforce

The number of people registered with qualification conditions varies depending on the Register part.

  • Day care of children 11,768 (39%)
  • Residential childcare and school care accommodation 4,233 (43%)
  • Care home for adults 24,128 (50%)
  • Care at home 39,461 (55%)
  • Housing support 31,692 (50%)
  • Adult day care 114 (33%)
  • Care Inspectors 158 (54%)

Altogether there are 111,554 registrations with a qualification condition deadline in the next five years.

It’s important to gain your qualification so we have a trusted, skilled and confident workforce delivering high quality services.

What if you need longer?

Most registrants do meet their qualification conditions on time; however, we know gaining a qualification isn’t always easy or straightforward and there can be lots of reasons that cause delays.

If you might not meet your qualification condition on time, it’s important you let us know and respond to our requests for information. We can only consider your circumstances and a possible extension if we know about them.

We want to avoid starting the Register removal process, but we have no choice if we don’t receive the necessary information.

As we’re still in a time of pressure post-pandemic we’re taking the challenges currently faced by the sector into consideration and allowing registrants more time to provide the information we need.

Working with employers

Employers should be making sure registrants who are nearing the deadline of their qualification condition are prioritised for training and they also need to let us know if registrants are due to retire or leave the sector when they haven’t gained a qualification.

Employers must also check the information registrants provide to explain why they’ve not gained a qualification and confirm a plan to get the worker qualified and provide anticipated dates for completion.
