A fitness to practise condition allows you to stay on the Register while putting measures in place to protect the public, uphold the public interest, or are in your interests.
There are three main types of conditions:
- supervision
- training
- reflective account.
Training is often a requirement of a condition when we want you to learn and improve your knowledge, skills and understanding to meet the standards of practice or behaviour required. We use the term ‘training’ in a broad sense, and we are generally flexible as to whether this is facilitated training or self-led learning.
A reflective account is often imposed alongside a training condition to allow you to show what you have learned from the training and how this will inform your future practice and reassure the SSSC that the behaviour of concern will not be repeated.
What training or learning you need will depend on what happened and the behaviour or practice we’re concerned about. We might ask you to do specific training or learning, and we might point you to certain resources to help with that.
For example, we could ask you to complete a SSSC MyLearning Badge that relates to the behaviour or practice of concern. In some cases, we will be more flexible and let you choose a course or learning activity that meets the condition requirements.
Free learning resources
We know it can be hard to access training or learning resources, especially if they cost money. That’s why we always encourage you to use our free SSSC resources, or ones from our trusted partners, whenever possible.
The SSSC, Care Inspectorate, and NHS Education for Scotland all offer free resources that can help meet your learning needs in relation to your condition.
SSSC Learning Zone
Whatever your role and level of experience, the Learning Zone makes it easy to find resources from the SSSC and trusted partners to support continuous professional learning across your career.
SSSC MyLearning
MyLearning is a free service provided by the SSSC to help you quickly and conveniently log learning activities wherever and whenever they take place. You can use your learning logs as evidence towards SSSC MyLearning Badges. Badges are digital certificates recognising learning and achievement. If you can demonstrate that you’ve learned from materials produced by the SSSC you can earn a badge.
SSSC Continuous Professional Learning
Continuous professional learning is the learning we do for work which helps us develop our knowledge, skills and professional behaviour so we can deliver our best practice. You will find a wide range of resources here specific to your role and learning needs.
Care Inspectorate Hub
The Hub provides access to a range of resources aimed at supporting improvement in the social care and social work sectors through the use and knowledge of research skills and evidence-led practice. You will find resources from the Care Inspectorate, as well as other partner bodies such as the SSSC, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, NHS Education for Scotland and the Scottish Government.
NHS Education for Scotland – Turas
Turas brings together everything you need from NHS Education for Scotland in one place. You can access health, wellbeing and social care tools or learning resources. Anyone can register for a free Turas account.
You can use other training or learning resources, as long as they meet the requirements of your condition. Unless your condition specifically says you must use the resources listed above, you don’t have to use them.
