Social Care Career Options Tool helps thousands in its first year

It’s been a year since we launched the Social Care Career Options Tool (SCCOT) in April 2025. Developed in partnership with Public Services Delivery Scotland (formerly NHS Education for Scotland) it provides a single, comprehensive digital resource covering 77 roles and career pathways across social care.

Early evaluation highlights success

The SCCOT has made significant impact on recruitment and career progression, helping people make informed decisions about starting a career in social care or advancing within the sector.

In the first six months, 4,495 people used the tool, from across 56 towns and cities across Scotland demonstrating broad reach.

73% of the job roles viewed were for entry level positions, highlighting the effectiveness in attracting new people to the sector.

Positive feedback

We’ve gathered feedback from users over the first year to help us identify future development including technical improvements, additional search filters and expanding the type of roles featured with real life stories.

Students from Forth Valley College in Falkirk rated SCCOT 4.31 out of 5, with 62% saying it would help them find a role.

Nine out of 11 King’s Trust participants said SCCOT increased their likelihood of joining the sector and 83% said it improved their understanding of career progression.

A Kings Trust participant said:

‘SCCOT opened up possibilities I hadn’t considered. It showed there’s more roles than the few you first think of when you think of social care.’

Department of Work and Pensions work coaches have also praised SCCOT for its clarity and breadth, noting its value in supporting customers to explore career options in social care.

Reflecting on success

Laura Lamb, SSSC Director of Workforce, Education and Standards said:

‘We are delighted with the initial success of the Social Care Careers Option Tool. This, alongside our other careers information and support, highlights the wide range of opportunities available helping people find and develop their career in care.

‘There are more than 110,000 people registered with us, working in social care services, so there are lots of opportunities to join the sector and a wide variety of roles available.’

Gordon Patterson, Director of the Social Care and Communities Directorate, Public Services Delivery Scotland said:

‘SCCOT is helping to transform how people view careers in social care, making the sector more accessible, attractive, and understood.’
