Careers in care

New resource for social care career information in Scotland

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) have launched a new Social Care Career Options Tool that will make it easier for people to find out about the wide range of roles and careers available in social care.

Whether someone is new to the social care sector or looking to advance their career, the mobile-friendly resource available through careersincare.scot will help guide them through over 75 roles across adult and children’s social care.

Role descriptions and real-life career stories will give people a better understanding of how their existing skills and experience can match the many opportunities available in the sector. Information on qualifications and career paths will help them plan their next step in education or employment.

The social service workforce makes up 7.8% of all Scottish employment. It is a hugely diverse sector with varied and flexible roles meaning there are career options suited to everyone. A job in social care offers the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others as well as to gain skills and qualifications.

Often people working in social care or looking to join the sector find it hard to discover and access reliable and detailed career information. Confusion over role types and entry requirements can put people off applying for roles that could start or advance their career in social care.

NES and the SSSC are working closely with partners in the sector to address this problem. The Social Care Career Options Tool is part of that work and designed to inspire more people to join and stay in the social care workforce.

The Social Care Career Options Tool is a major step forward in supporting the development of Scotland’s social care workforce but work continues to expand the information available. Job roles and career paths will continue to be added and an AI chatbot is being developed that will make it even easier for people find career options and information relevant to them.

Gordon Paterson, Director, Social Care Directorate at NES said:

'I am very pleased that the Social Care Directorate in NES has had the opportunity to work in partnership with the SSSC, and the wider social care sector in developing the Social Care Career Options Tool. As well as being of benefit to both prospective and new recruits to social care, this important resource will aid providers in their efforts to address the recruitment and retention challenges facing the sector.'

Laura Lamb, SSSC Director of Workforce Education and Standards said:

‘We are delighted to add the Social Care Careers Option Tool to our existing range of careers information and support. Partnering with NES and those in the sector has helped deliver a resource that will promote and highlight the wide range of career opportunities within the sector and provide current, up-to-date information relevant to both the workforce and employers. The easy to navigate information and inspiring career stories will make it simpler than ever for people to find and develop their career in care.’
