Careers in care

Help us build a Careers Opportunities Tool for adult and children’s social care

The social service workforce makes up 7.8% of all Scottish employment. It is a hugely diverse sector with varied and flexible roles meaning there are career options suited for everyone.

A job in social care offers the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others as well as to gain skills and qualifications.

However, people working in social care or looking to join the sector often find it hard to discover and navigate careers information and what advice there is doesn’t cover all there is on offer.

The SSSC and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) are working together to tackle this problem and encourage more workers to join and to stay in the social care sector. This is one of two projects we have been asked to deliver by the Join Social Services Taskforce during 2024/25 alongside the National Induction Framework.

In this project, we will work together with partners to deliver an online Careers Opportunities Tool for the adult and children’s social care workforce.

The Careers Opportunities Tool will make it easy to find out more about the wide range of roles and careers available. It will include information on up to 100 different job roles and what skills and experience are needed.

This digital platform will also include tools to help people discover the roles that best match their skills, experience and interests and provide information on how they can progress or specialise in their career.

Help us design the Careers Opportunities Tool

It's important the new platform reflects the real needs and experiences of those working in all parts of the adult and children’s social care sector across Scotland.

To help us design the platform, we are asking people to let us know if they would like to be invited to take part in future workshops, demonstrations and surveys.

We want to hear from people at all stages of their career including those:

  • just beginning their career in social care
  • returning from a career break or after working in other sectors
  • thinking of how they can switch or progress their career
  • looking for ways to recruit and support their staff.

The next event is an online forum on Tuesday 20 August at 2.00pm. We will demonstrate the options we are considering and give people the chance to tell us what would best support them to access the information they need.
