Funded places for social workers on the Scottish Improvement Leader (ScIL) programme

Quality improvement knowledge and skills is an important area for development in social services and one that we want to support. We are working with partners to raise awareness and help people working in social services to access this support.

This includes using the Model for Improvement which provides a framework for addressing improvement needs often identified through quality assurance activity. It has been used in health services for some time, and in some parts of social services, however engagement activity with the sector has highlighted that some services are not aware of the model and its potential or related improvement tools and techniques. A need for further learning support has been identified to develop its use in social services.

To support this learning activity, and as part of our workforce development role, we have been working with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) to raise awareness of their quality improvement learning programmes with social service workers. The Scottish Improvement Leader Programme (ScIL) is one of these and provides learning for workers in roles with a significant focus on quality improvement and dedicated time allocated to lead improvement projects.

To increase the capacity of the sector in respect of leading quality improvement activity, we are funding eight places for social workers in the next ScIL cohort starting in November 2025. We will work with NES to select the successful applicants.
