Leadership Your learning Funding

Developing quality improvement leaders in Scotland’s social services

We are working with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) to offer funded places for the Scottish Improvement Leader programme (ScIL).

We are committed to working with partners to support workers in social services develop quality improvement knowledge and skills. This includes use of the Model for Improvement which provides a framework for addressing improvement needs often identified via quality assurance activity.

It has been used in health services for some time, and in some parts of social services, however engagement activity with the sector has highlighted that some services are not aware of the model and its potential or related improvement tools and techniques. So we are offering further learning support to develop its use in social services.

Scottish Improvement Leader

To support this learning activity, and as part of our workforce development role, we have been working with NES to raise awareness of their quality improvement learning programmes with social service workers.

The Scottish Improvement Leader Programme (ScIL) is one of these and provides learning for workers in roles with a significant focus on quality improvement and dedicated time allocated to lead improvement projects.

To increase the capacity of the sector in respect of leading quality improvement activity, the SSSC is funding additional places for social service workers in ScIL cohorts starting in 2023-24. We will work with NES to select these places.

SSSC Acting Director of Workforce, Education and Standards, Laura Lamb said:

‘We’re pleased to offer funded places on the Scottish Improvement Leader Programme.

‘This programme is an excellent example of how partners can work together to deliver training that allows workers to develop their quality improvement knowledge and skills to better deliver improvement projects in their service.’
